Housline.gif (8234 bytes)

Five Borgman brothers came over to the United States from Kingdom of Hannover, Prussia (now Germany) beginning in 1837. According to a Borgman Reunion Booklet, the brothers and their spouses are as follows:

Nicholas Borgman married Elizabeth Kreuger
John J(G)arrett Henry Borgman married Lucy Margaret Deaker
Harman Borgman married Mary Borgman
Henry Borgman married Sabina Kennedy
John Borgman married Margaret Bishop

Below are charts with data pertaining to some of these brothers, or their descendants..

Note (for next 2 charts): The 1860 census, Tunnelton, Preston County, WV (this census and the 1870 census for Preston County were next to impossible to read per Elaine. The part that had Tunnelton was not too bad and she was able to salvage this information -- the rest of it was unreadable. (Note & data was from Elaine Berchdorf Judd)

May have been a cousin or something, but generally when they are listed last like this, they are not part of the immediate family
This is the son of John J(G)arrett Henry Borgman who married Mary Elizabeth Korte. She was previously married to John Henry Rickelman, that's why the listing for the John Rickelman above. Her first husband died while building their log home. Their children in the Borgman Booklet were listed as: Mary Ann, Josephine, Joseph A., Francis S., Lena, William I., Catherine Euginia, Edward & Sylvester. In the Borgman Booklet he was only listed as Henry Borgman.

Side Note: There is a Clara Rickelman that married Clemens Greaser (William Greaser’s son), I am hoping someday to find out if there is a connection with her, and the John Rickleman shown living with the Borgman's above.

This is the wife of John Nicholas Borgman, (Elizabeth Krueger-German parents called children by middle name). Nicholas Borgman was reportedly the first to be buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, he died in 1847, the census confirms that. I suspect the other children weren't listed because they were married.

Borgman Family: The first known information about my ancestors emigrating to America on my paternal side is with the so called, "Five Borgman Brothers". Based on a Family Reunion document originally dated 24 August 1927, there were five brothers that came to America, the first of which was my Great Great Grandfather, John J(G)arrett Henry Borgman, in 1837 from possibly  Ankum, Kingdom of Hanover, Prussia. I hope to put the entire document on-line one-day, at this time I have only done a partial transcription. I personally have a feeling that the Borgman & Greaser Families may have emigrated together. It was not uncommon for some German communities to "charter" (for lack of a better term) a ship and emigrate together due to their hardships and strife. I discovered a diary on-line, written by Michael Fredrich Radtke, who left the exact same part of Prussia at nearly the same time as my ancestors. I couldn’t help but be taken back to partake in what my ancestors went through at that time in Prussia, and their journey via ship. If you had ancestors that left Prussia in the 1840’s or so, I think you may enjoy reading his diary, and visiting their hometown, Ankum, in Kingdom of Hannover.
