Abt 1865

Gillis Family:  I have located quite a bit of census information on my GG Grandparents and their  descendants. As you can see from the census charts above, I have compiled the collection I have to date from 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901. It wasn’t until the census in 1881 that they included the BCFMR data. The B designated the Person’s birthplace, the M is for Mother birthplace, F is for where Father born and R for the family’s Religious affiliation. My Great Great Grandmother, Catherine (married to Angus Gillis) who was on the 1891 census has her BCFMR code as NSSC, which means, she was born in Nova Scotia, but both her mother & father (John "Red" Gillis & Christy MacDonald) were born in Scotland and then emigrated to New Scotland (Nova Scotia) in Canada. I will be adding ship and passenger information as I find it, so don't forget to check that file drawer from time to time. I would suspect that it was Angus’s father that also came from Scotland. There is a high probability then, that the first Gillis’s to come to this new land, was possibly Angus’s father, who was most likely named John Gillis*.

* The Scottish custom was to name the first boy & first girl after the husband’s parents, and then to name the second boy & second girl after the wife’s parents. It is pretty clear the Gillis’s followed this standard tradition based on the names gathered thus far. Therefore, I have listed Angus’s father as John Gillis in my database, but that is not a certainty.
