Prior to the Civil War, Preston County (and other parts of what is current day WV)
were actually Virginia. So, some of the census records will say Virginia versus WV.

Richards & Reynolds (Ranels) Family: Edward & Lucinda (Brott) Richards are my Grandmother’s, Lucy (Richards) Greaser, parents. Photo’s of them, along with their six children can be viewed in the Family Photo Album. Not much is known about Lucinda’s parents & siblings at this time, but the search continues on. If you have anything about her, even if it’s just names of her brothers & sisters please Email Me. Edward’s father was Michael Richards and he was married to Mary Anna (Ranels) Reynolds. I am not sure which spelling is accurate right now, based on 1860 Alleghany County census records, it was recorded as Reynolds, but that doesn’t mean they heard Ranels and wrote Reynolds, right. On the same census, it listed a Luke Richards as age 60, and Michael as age 30. This could possibly mean that Luke was Michael’s father who came over with them, or joined them here after they emigrated to America.  They were from Connaught, County Mayo, Ireland. That part surprised me, I was told I was half German from my father’s side, and then English, Irish & Scottish from my mother’s side.  So, it was refreshing to see that the Richards also brought some Irish blood into the Greaser’s line.
