Background:
LST stands for Landing Ship Tank and it was the workhorse of World War II.  I have also read they joked about LST standing for large slow target since her maximum speed (earlier ones) was 11 knots.  In any event, only 26 of the 1051 LSTs built during the war were lost to enemy action or weather during their service. Be sure to stop in the "Special Memories" section below for video clips of the Amphibious Forces at Normandy on D-Day and the Memorial there now.

Ship History: LST 996 was laid down on 27 March 1944 at the Boston Navy Yard and launched on 2 May 1944. She was sponsored by Mrs. Ursula A. Hall and commissioned on 23 May 1944, with Ensign Charles A. Leach, Jr., USNR in command.

LST Configuration
:
LST’s were built with just about everything you needed aboard, this one even turned an Ammo storage room into a darkroom. The general schematic depicts all the different areas aboard an LST. There is also a link to show you a typical weekly menu from aboard an LST!

I was very impressed by all the hard work you have put into the site and have to congratulate you on a wonderful achievement in web site design.  I would like to extend my congratulations on producing a very informative and resourceful web site dedicated to the Officers and Crewmen of the LST 996. An excellent addition to the web, one that you should be very proud of. Large Slow Target, not the greatest place to spend a holiday cruising .....:-)   ..... enclosed is our Award of Excellence for your site.
