Below is an excerpt from the Borgman Reunion Booklet Preface (dated August 1927):
According to information obtained from Mrs. Sarah Lynch of Tunnelton, West Virginia, and Clemence Borgman of Kingwood, West Virginia. The two oldest members of the Borgman family now living in Preston County, W.VA.
... Very little data is obtainable of the German parents of the first generation of Borgman as we will call them, except that they lived in what was known as the Kingdom of Hanover, now a part of the German Republic.
Of the children of these German parents, we trace five as coming to America, beginning with the year 1837. First came John Jarrett (I have discovered this is Garrett) Henry Borgman (my GG-Grandfather), arriving at the Port of Richmond, Virginia, in the year of 1837. Nicholas Borgman coming about two years later in 1839. Afterwards at short intervals the three brothers Harman Borgman, Henry Borgman, and John Borgman, but the order in which they came to the United States is not known.
Clemence I. Borgman has information that a sister of the five Borgman brothers came to this country and married a man named Fibben (have not been able to locate Fibben name to date), and that the family was last heard of living in Coldwater, Ohio.
Aside from the five or possibly six children, that came to America, there were one or more brothers left in Hannover. Mrs. Mariah Swearingen remembers one of her aunts, a daughter of Nicholas Borgman, telling of going to church in Hanover with an uncle, a brother of these Borgman's that came to America. This one brother at least did not come over.
John Garrett Henry Borgman and (John) Nicholas Borgman moved from Oldstown (this is actually Old Town, about 12 miles from Cumberland), Maryland where they had lived since they arrived in America. In 1840 they moved to Preston County, Virginia (this was before separation from the mother state of Virginia, and now known as West Virginia). Some years later came Harman Borgman who lived in Preston County for a short time.
So far most of this has proven to be accurate, although to date we are still seeking ship information on all the brothers. If you have any input to the above, please Email me.
