In the name of God Amen, the twenty first day of May, one thousand eight hundred and sixty eight.
I, John Gillis, of the Back Settlement of Arisaig, in the County of Antigonish and Province of Nova Scotia, farmer, being very sick and weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks he giveth unto the God; therefore calling into mind the mortality of the body, knowing that is appointed unto all men once to die; do make and ordain this my last will and testament; that is to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent burial at the discretion of my executors; nothing doubting but at the general reservations I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God. And understanding such wordly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form:
First, I give and bequeath to my son John Gillis five shillings currency of the Province of Nova Scotia.
Also, I give and bequeath to my son Donald Gillis five shillings currency of the Province of Nova Scotia.
I give and bequeath to my son Lauchlin Gillis one hundred acres of land on the west side of my farm with all improvements and appurtenances thereunto belonging, himself paying for the Grant of the same.
I give and bequeath to my son Alexander Gillis sixty five acres of land out of the middle one hundred acres to be given on the west side of the same.
I give and bequeath to my daughter Flora Gillis thirty five acres of land out of the east side of the middle one hundred acres to run the whole length of the middle lot of land (the compliment of which I above bequeathed to my son Alexander Gillis).
Also, I give and bequeath to my to my son Angus Gillis the last one hundred acres of land on which I now reside with all the house, improvements, appurtenances thereto belonging: in consideration of which my son Angus is to leave and give the use of one end of the house to my daughter Flora until she shall be married otherwise during her lifetime.
And I further direct that my son Angus Gillis and Alexander Gillis aforesaid and shall each pay an equal share of the debt that may stand against me at my death, and also direct that the aforesaid Flora Gillis, my daughter shall never sell her portion of land above described except to one of her brothers, and that the aforesaid Alexander shall have for all time the use of the barn which may be on my daughter Floras portion of land already mentioned.
And I do by these presents nominate, constitute and appoint Lewis McInnis Eachen and John McDonald (Lody) my Executors of this my last will and testament revoking hereby and making void all former and other wills, heretofore by one made; notifying and confirming this and no other be my last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof those hereunto set my hand and seal, the day and year above written.
